Doctrine of Four states
In Hindu philosophies there are four states
State of awake-Where the Atman is perceiving and
acting by the mode of the Manas (mind) with the help of Indriyas (senses)
State of Dreaming- Where the Ataman ceased senses
to act and help but the mind remains active. The Atman with mind moves in the
body and sees dreams made out of the loose ends of former impression in Smartis
(Memories)

State of deep and dreamless sleep- Where the Ataman
completely separated from mind and senses but the vital essence of Atman that
is consciousness remains in full activity. There is no role of mind and senses
in this state but the consciousness as a vital part still remain in the body.
The Atman become one like Brahman but returned unchanged at the time o
awakening.
State of death- Where the Ataman with the sukshma
Sarir (vital small body) escaped from the heart and body through a vein in the
head or through the hundred veins of the body and then to take according to
merits and knowledge the different paths towards the next life.
